Optimization of the elimination of antibiotics by Lemna gibba and Azolla filiculoides using response surface methodology (RSM)

Antibiotic residues have been found in environmental samples, such as water, soil, and even food, usually come from wastewater, presenting human health risks. This study aimed to improve the elimination of antibiotics tetracycline (Tet) chloramphenicol (Chlor) by modifying three factors: contact time (3–7 days), plant biomass (10–14 g), antibiotic concentration (5–15 mg/L Tet 10–20 Chlor). An approach that optimizes resources, response surface methodology (RSM), was applied with a Box–Behnken design (BBD) two species ( L. gibba A. filiculoides ), i.e., one experimental used for each species. water samples were analyzed liquid chromatography. The optimal conditions removal 6.04 d, 11.4 g, 13.4 Lemna 6.3 11.9 14.7 Azolla ; Chlor 7.8 13.6 10.2 4.6 12.3 8.7 . results showed efficiency increased depending on used, reaching maximum up 100%. better removed than Chlor, values 100% 84% , respectively. reached 70% 64% mean bioconcentration factors (BCFs) 2.9% 4.9% BCFs 38.1% 37.8% Thus, general, obtained In summary, demonstrate this selected plants contribute antibiotics, sustainable recommended alternative treatment wastewater contaminated residues.
